Innovation in the stars:

TRICAS develops smart antenna housing for ASTRON

For the continued development of the LOFAR antenna system, ASTRON and TRICAS recently collaborated on a concept for a new antenna housing: KEA-LOFAR. The goal was to explore a solution that is easy to assemble, contains few components, and is suitable for efficient field deployment.

The collaboration began with a joint exploration of functional requirements, usage, and environment. Based on this, a concept was developed centered around a ‘Kit for Easy Assembly’ — a lightweight, compact set that can be built without tools. Through design studies, visualizations, and in-house manufacturing of an initial prototype, the idea that offers the greatest advantages for assembly ease, scalability, material usage, and costs could be made concrete and shared within both organizations.

The current deliverable is a concept that serves as a starting point for further testing. Setting up a test field to investigate the practical feasibility of the design in an outdoor environment would be a logical next step, after which optimization and industrialization possibilities can be explored.

The current intermediate step demonstrates how an open and iterative design process, with input from various disciplines, can lead to tangible results. KEA-LOFAR is an example of how collaboration between research and design can contribute to solutions for complex technical challenges.
