Touching Up User Experience: Integrating the Latest in Touch Technologies
As posted before, TRICAS is continuously searching for new technologies to enable innovation in our clients’ products.
Recently TRICAS performed a research project for seamless activation technologies, also called ‘touch technologies’. Seamless touch technologies are used to control a device, while keeping its smooth design by unnoticeable integration. This seamless design not only improves the overall user experience but also brings other key benefits, including increased robustness and cost savings. By eliminating moving parts typically found in switch mechanisms, these touch technologies can reduce the complexity and wear-and-tear of devices.
During the project, sensors with various working principles have been scouted, integrated and validated in an actual existing reference product of our client. Ultimately this has led to a proof of principle prototype that provides a seamless touch experience when swiping across the surface of the product.
Technologies such as piezo, capacitive and resistive have their own pros and cons, and have their own ideal area of application whereas applied materials, user-requirements, costs and available electronic peripherals are important determinators. Based on our R&D experiments and extensive testing with various prototypes, we ultimately selected a MEMS (Micro-Electro-Mechanical Systems) force sensor.
One of the key insights we gained during the development of proof-of-concept prototypes was the importance of mechanical integration. For instance, the placement of sensors relative to the touch surface, the pre-load of the sensors, and the surrounding mechanical construction were all critical factors in achieving optimal performance. Ultra-sensitive sensors like MEMS force sensors can be influenced by even the slightest pressure applied to the device—such as when a user simply holds it. This can lead to unintended behavior if not properly accounted for, but it also presents exciting opportunities for new, innovative use cases.
To achieve the right user experience, the right software implementation is crucial. The raw output from the sensor must be carefully filtered and processed to achieve reliable, predictable behavior.
Along the project we partnered up with our valuable partner Qorvo. A front-running technology supplier of force sensors, suitable for all kinds of (touch) applications and cross-over applications.
